About South Island
New Zealand’s South Island concentrates some of the world’s most photogenic 4WD terrain. Skippers Canyon, the Macetown track from Arrowtown, the Molesworth Station crossing, the Rainbow Road, and the West Coast forestry runs cover the highlights.
Other notable zones include the Nevis, the Old Man Range, the Catlins, the Lewis Pass back-country, and the Buller forestry network. Most public conservation land is covered by the DOC vehicle pass system.
Snow closes alpine tracks above 1000 metres from June through October. Skippers Canyon in particular has narrow shelf-cut sections with no passing room — research the route before you start. Chains and recovery gear are recommended in winter.

Frequently asked questions
Is Skippers Canyon accessible in a rental 4WD?
Rental vehicles are contractually prohibited from Skippers Canyon under virtually all standard NZ rental agreements — check your contract before proceeding. In a personally-owned 4WD with a driver who has reviewed the route and is comfortable on single-lane shelf roads, Skippers is achievable but demands full attention. Don't attempt it in a large-wheelbase vehicle or if you're uncomfortable reversing on cliff edges.
When does the Molesworth Station open for through traffic?
The Molesworth route through the Awatere Valley from Hanmer Springs to Blenheim is typically open from late November through April, weather permitting. Hamner Springs Adventures and DOC both post current status. The route can close after significant rain at any time during the open season. There is no phone coverage for most of the route — carry a satellite communicator.
Do you need chains for South Island alpine 4WD routes in winter?
Chains are legally required on several South Island mountain passes during winter conditions. For backcountry 4WD routes above 800 metres from June through September, chains are strongly recommended even when not legally required. The McKenzie Basin, Molesworth, and Central Otago alpine tracks are closed under DOC seasonal closure rules from roughly June through October.
What DOC permit do I need for South Island 4WD tracks?
Most South Island public conservation land managed by DOC does not require a vehicle permit for day access on formed roads. Overnight camping in DOC huts and campsites requires booking (and fees) through the DOC website or Great Walks booking system. Vehicle access to the Nevis, Skippers, and Molesworth is via public roads. Private station crossings (Molesworth is Crown land managed by the NZFSA) don't require DOC permits but follow specific access terms.
