About Wellington
Wellington region sits at the southern tip of the North Island, and its 4WD scene is shaped by the Remutaka (Rimutaka) Range and the Tararua Ranges. The Remutaka Forest Park and the Wainuiomata Regional Park give accessible off-road driving within 30 minutes of Wellington city.
The Remutaka Cycle Trail crossing and the historic Remutaka Incline access routes are the most-driven 4WD routes in the region. The Tararua Range fringe tracks to Ōtaki Forks and the Kāpiti Coast back-roads complete the picture.
Year-round driving is possible in the lower country. The Tararua Ridge is exposed and can hold snow in winter. Wellington's notorious wind is less relevant to 4WD than to road motorcyclists, but heavy rain after wind events can close the lower forest tracks temporarily.
